Hi, people of SA
I’m looking for some opinions concerning a school project…
They’ve given us a geography task in which we have to choose an empty plot in South Africa (could be absolutely anywhere in the country), and pretend that we’re going to build something on that empty plot- something realistic to that area and likely to succeed. My idea is to build an all-purpose market (arts, crafts, fresh food, whatever sellers want to sell) in an empty plot that lies very near to Gold Reef City and the Apartheid Museum. Theoretically, anyone would be able to sell at this market and be allocated a specific stall so long as they pay a small rent fee. The reason I thought this was a good idea is because it gives impoverished people who can’t find jobs an opportunity to sell things they’ve easily made/grown/cooked, and I think the financial prospects would be specifically good for people who sell at this market because it’s in such a popular area, visited by both tourists and citizens who would go mad for authentic African artworks and jewellery, and organic, fresh produce. So to whoever may be reading, I’d really like to hear your opinion on this idea… I like it as a whole, but I’m having some doubts. Should I make the market specific to just food or just art, and not both? Do you think I could use this plot of land more wisely? Do both the location AND the building idea suck?
